They rely on a centralized structure where the producer is forced to host video with a specific provider if he or she wants to participate in video-based conversations. This stands in staunch opposition to the ways comments on blogs function. There, anyone can participate on equal footing by publishing commentary on their own blogs and then use conversation trackers such as Technorati or technologies such as TrackBacks to assemble a distributed conversation across all blogs, not just those powered by a specific provider. A working distributed video commenting system based on open standards and open-source technologies will be demonstrated, and we will explore the underlying design of the system to determine how it differs from centralized video commenting services. The system will also be used as a case study for a broader discussion of how to track visual conversations online: What kind of assumptions are present in distributed database models, and do these assumptions foster a certain type of conversation? How do we create interaction design to navigate these visual conversations? Is there even a space for equal access video conversations across domains, or has YouTube taken over to a degree where other ways to handle conversations are doomed to fail? As William Gibson once stated: “The future is here; it just isn't equally distributed yet.” This kind of cultural fetishism extends to not only technolust, but the practices that new gadgets and electronics encourage. The phenomenon I'd like to focus on in this paper is that of virtual girlfriends and boyfriends: whether in the form of digital avatars, automated text messages, or episodic confessionals on YouTube. Such hyper-mediated encounters – which emerged from Japan, but are spreading unevenly over the globe – fascinate and appall those who still hold P2P romance IRL in high-esteem. A romantic relationship between a flesh-and-blood person and a computerized image seems like an insult to the intrinsically human and humanist discourse of courtship; and indeed it is. How does this perspective change, however, if we consider “love” as a technology? That is, as both a code with its own algorithmic parameters, and a discourse which challenges the hyper-rational assumptions of the “merely machinic.” Extending arguments articulated in my most recent book, Love and Other Technologies, this paper asks how the emergence of virtual dating, and other cybernetically-inflected treatments of romance, are working to undo our jealously-held notions of intimacy and identity. In doing so, this presentation seeks to explore the specific libidinal economy of user-generated online hubs, in order to suggest that we are witnessing the early coalescence of a new inclusive mode of community. They show the same Vertigo tour shows of the concertfilm ‘U23D’ I saw the evening before in Brussels’ IMAX film venue. It is said to be the first 3-D multi-camera recording of a live event ever. All the muscles of this 85 minute immersive experience of tangible high definition, spectacular spidercam shots and graphic overlays contrast highly with the ephemeral qualities of these short, handheld ‘cellflix’ of Argentinian and Mexican teenagers. But they are both signs of our times. In one of these amateur videos we find our 15 years old cameraman laughing at the lens in extreme close-up, meanwhile joking to his friends. They’re all waiting for the kick-off of the long expected U2 concert of the Vertigo tour. Night has fallen, and he sweeps his phone 360 grades around: a generic camera movement to express exposition. We get vaguely an idea of the enormous mass of people gathered in the football stadium, an average of 100 000 people according to the website of ‘U23D’. We seem miles away from the stage. Now the blaring lights of this sports arena go out, and for a long time the quicktime player shows nothing but a black screen, if not for the glowing mobile screens, like dirty pixels. The start of the concert is pure ecstasy, and abstract: a distant light explosion and videowalls popping up in the dark. The phone returns to his pocket, while much closer to the action the ‘U23D’ crew gets its multi-camera set rolling. To achieve the 3-D stereoscopical effect, the concert is filmed simultanuously by a double camera apparatus: a grateful metaphore for the multiple video practices I want to discuss here. (Martha Rosler: To argue for a video of representaiton. To argue for a video against the mythology of everyday life, published in Illuminating Video, 1990) The artistic videos in the screening programme Always on your minds are dealing with the visual and textual qualities of amateur YouTube videos, mostly recorded in everyday enviornments. The programme is looking at the characteristics of YouTube as a successor to television, as well as showing contemporary video artists appliance of the medium video and the questioning of the speaker's position, knowing about the 1960s and 70s video works by artists like Richard Serra or Vito Acconci. So first-person-narrative as a representational strategy appears in the artistic videos as well as in their references, be it mass culture like YouTube or conceptual video art, and appears as a mode of both subjective confessions and artistic discourse, while naturalism is taken to be narrative's central feature. Bernd Krauss parodies the naturalism of documentary, live TV and other familiar formats. Martha Rosler stated in the same text as cited above that „in choosing representational strategies I aim for the distancing (ostranenie, the Verfremdungseffekt), the distantiation occasioned by a refusal of realism, by foiled expectations, by palpably foulted conventions.“ Karolin Meunier creates such a distance in her video Reading as video. Video as reading by taking on the spoken text in the video Boomerang (1974) by Richard Serra as well as the reception of this video by art historian Rosalind Krauss. Authors of YouTube videos talk and sing straight into the camera. The subject speaking into the camera, carries the weight of credibility and on the other side tries to catch up with the duty to entertain. In contrast, artists’ videos proceed according to precisely the technique described here; they use methods – recombination, delay, distortion – asking for oberservation of the footage of the amateur masses. For example Oliver Laric: he took excerpts selected from the immense quantity of amateur raps to a hit by American musician 50 Cent, and edited them together into a sequence including the original volume and atmosphere of the YouTube clips. This then gave rise to a kind of master video clip, 50 50, multiplying the fans. And what does it mean then when video artist Stéphane Querrec takes the aesthetics and text of amateur confessions and condenses these to form a new rehearsed script? In contrast with Laric’s work, here a host of different voices merge into one universal voice, changing surprisingly as if you were zapping through YouTube with melancholy, hysterical and surprisingly witty monologues. The super-monologue, which is spoken by a non-professional actress with Querrec prompting, is strikingly pertinent and yet also drives you crazy. same time, Laric’s sampled video puts forward an analysis of what typical YouTube material offers. In a way the videos provide visual pendants to sociological observation – picking up the everyday “language” of YouTube. The term itself carries ideological connotations and refers to certain notions which have been essential to the online communications from the very beginning; dynamic participation, interactivity, decentralization, non-hierarchical organization, autonomy, self-expression, freedom of expression etc. We feel very much compelled to question the political effects of this model by critically evaluating the economic aspects of it. But this is not an easy task, since the traditional concepts and formulas of critical political-economy falls very short of approaching the constitutive dynamics of this new production mode, yet alone being explanatory. Neither the “value” created in this model is tangible as in the industrial production mode that the classical theories of political-economy were designed for, nor the “labor” processes that create it has anything in common with the “waged labor.” Therefore, while we have to critically evaluate the political effects of such new mode of immaterial production, we also have to compose new theoretical tools and approaches. One obvious characteristic of this new production model is that, it operates by organizing the existing social relations under its own logic, by making the basic social relations “productive” (in a commercial sense) and creating “value” out of “play” rather than “work.” Then, it seems appropriate to discuss the political effects of such new form of economic production by utilizing the theoretical tools we find effective for understanding the political structuring of the “social” in a broader sense –such as “bio-politics,” “governmentality,” “economy of desire” etc., which will be the task of my presentation. When engaged with the site they will have the capacity to broadcast a representation of their interests, skills or worldview – their Self. They will also be enabled to do the broadcasting themselves. This slogan serves as a culturally resonant promise of a redistribution of the means of production; of a re-enchantment of the mediated world, if not society generally. Indeed when juxtaposed with the alienating and rationalized industrial model of broadcast media, it seems impossible to not view YouTube and its affordances as a site of renewed agency for individuals. What is less obvious is whether this agency necessarily offers radical potential and the extension of meaningful social power to those who mobilize it. Using the central conceit that the slogan represents YouTube’s core principals, this paper is an attempt to explore the nature of the site and its relationship to hegemonic neoliberal governance models. In doing so, the agency of the YouTube user as a radical and disruptive form of power is challenged. Nevertheless, this paper seeks to complicate this position with some thoughts about the substantive nature of agency within this assemblage gleaned from an investigation of talk in podcasting. It asks: if the agential power attributed to digital media consumers cannot constitute a rupture of dominant discourses, what form does this power actually take? Furthermore, it often focuses on settings, where instrumental, strategic or teleological action occurs, for instance “operating together” (Mondada, 2001) or “telling a joke” (Sacks & Jefferson, 1995). Language and the rationality of teleological action, it seems, are steering mechanisms needed to transform a mere gathering of people and things into orderly situations that can be socially accounted for. The setting I would like to talk about seems to lack those two fundamental features. In my paper I look at video footage from an extended ethnographic study of a New York based Media Collective and their weekly “Multi-Media-Open-Jam-Session” . Here, friends and strangers gather every Sunday night in an 8 hrs Session, producing non-structured audio and video /together./ In this setting there are up to 16 participants, playing simultaneously digital, analogue and acoustic instruments. Sometimes sounds and images are produced in a computer mediated collective environment (several networked laptops), sometimes there is even streams coming in, or remote collaborations taking place simultaneously with the local jam. Since the setting provides non-idiomatic improvisation it could be argued, that it is lacking fundamental accountability (Garfinkel, 1967), making it a difficult border-line case of the social, the comprehensible and one might argue, the sane. An approach to this setting might be attempted in following Goffman’s (1981; 1986) deconstruction of the assumptions of orderliness and accountability in utterances in conversation, and his argument for focussing (similar to Schütz, 1951) on more atmospherical notions like „being together“ in a shared space as a kind of primordial layer of the social. The notion of “being together acoustically” is the center of my study on acoustic occurrences in this setting of interaction without discourse. What I am after are phenomena like: “Giving up control and agency”, “Letting go”, “Waiting for an event to happen in a non-structured space”, “letting order occur and disappear”. Used in the context of culture, it concerns an intiative, with which the formation of social, intercultural and cultural competence and identity meets new "cultural techniques" that more and more came from the media-use of children and young people: mobile and online, creatively, participative and playfully. It can orginate a cultural dialogue between different groups. Collaborative created media, which can be commented, evaluated and rated by their useres, support the development of an enhanced participation in cultural knowledge processes, live-long-learning environmemts, and art production. The generation of different ITC-based participation methods at the places of local history and art exhibition, means exchange of experts, medialization of museums and exchange of the museums with citizens as well as the communication between different parts of the population. Visitor participation bases on the experience, that people today enjoy more to take active part in the information processes that surround them, then to consume only passively. The information transfer can get more into a common activity between offerers and users in active communities. The active communities generate information together, improve, supplement and correct them. Culture consumers become designers and will better understand and identify themselves with the idea behind it, which is a core goal cultural work. Martin Koplin will refer to samples of the actual work of the M2C Institute in the field of mobile cross-border storytelling in public space and participation in the context of museums. Martin Koplin - Media Artist and Researcher Martin is Director of the M2C Institute for Applied Media Sciences at the University of Applied Sciences in Bremen, Germany, that was founded in 2007 after the eCulture Factory of the Fraunhofer Institute in Bremen was closed. He worked as media artist for over 14 years and as a scientific researcher in the field of digital media and eCulture. Actually he works on mobile media research and development projects. At the same time, the sheer amount of new content has made sites, such as YouTube, that aggregate and organize that content increasingly important - the de-facto "new Networks." And now, when through government or corporate action, access to that media or in extreme cases, the network itself, is denied we find that media democratization may seem alarmingly fragile. This presentation will look at how people have successfully created alternatives to the new "alternatives" and how censorship in the 21st century is becoming increasingly infeasible. Bio: I'm Michael Verdi. I usually just go by "Verdi" because, let's face it, there are way too many Michaels in the world and Verdi is a pretty cool name for an artist. I'm 40 years old, married and the father of two beautiful daughters. Na de oorlog maakt hij zich druk over het feit dat de geschiedenis van Kamp Erika vergeten wordt. In 2006 slaagt hij erin van de steen in het bos een echt monument te maken.

Dat er in Leusden een monument voor ‘zijn’ Russen is gekomen hoort hij bij toeval van zijn zoon. Hij vertelt waarom hem dat zo raakt.

Toch herinnert hij zich de angstige momenten uit zijn kindertijd. Tijdens de Bersiap en ook daarna keert de haat van de Indonesiërs zich tegen de nog aanwezige Nederlanders. Ook van het gezin Hielckert worden alle bezittingen afgenomen. Ze vertrekken naar Nederland, waar een moeizame aanpassing volgt. Als dienstplichtig marinier wordt Hielckert uitgezonden naar Nieuw-Guinea. Daar zijn de Indonesiërs de vijand, wat heel dubbel voor hem is. Later besluit hij in Zwolle een monument op te richten ter nagedachtenis aan alle slachtoffers die in Indonesië én in Nieuw-Guinea gevallen zijn.

In Sliedrecht en Hardinxveld herinneren plaquettes aan de plek waar hij en de andere 900 jongens zijn weggevoerd.

Hij verblijft daar tot september '44, in voor de oorlog luxe omstandigheden. Overigens tot Kohnstamms grote ergernis, want hij kan vanuit het kamp niet bijdragen aan de strijd tegen het nazisme. Acht gijzelaars uit Haaren worden door de bezetter gefusilleerd. 'Blijft waakzaam, eens is genoeg', staat op de poort van Haaren.

Nu is hij één van de drie vliegeniers die nog in leven zijn van de veertig die samen zijn opgeleid in de jaren dertig. Elk jaar komen ze bij elkaar bij de herdenking bij het Monument voor Gevallen Vliegers.

Zo ontkomt hij maar net aan de overplaatsing naar een strafkamp of erger. Bijna al zijn kampkameraden komen uiteindelijk om in vernietigingskampen.

George heeft zelf minder geluk en wordt opgepakt. Hij sterft in Dachau.

Drie van hen komen om doordat een tank ontploft. Vijftig jaar na dato ontwerpt Ruud Nobbe een gedenkteken. Om een ereschuld in te lossen, zoals hij zelf zegt.

Na de oorlog zet ze zich in voor de Joodse gemeenschap en in 2006 neemt ze initiatief tot het oprichten van een gedenksteen voor alle Nederlandse slachtoffers van Bergen-Belsen.

Lang blijft dit deel van de oorlogsgeschiedenis onbekend. Philip Everaars richt in 2001 samen met Chris van der Ven het Dampit-monument op, om de herinnering levend te houden.

Vader, moeder en zusje Rebecca Asser komen om in Sobibor.

Of, zoals ze haar Marokkaanse overbuurman uitlegt, allochtoon zijn betekent dat je zelf of je ouders niet in Nederland geboren zijn. Meer niet. "Met onderscheid maken is niks mis, het mag alleen niet tot discriminatie leiden".

De jeugd moet de geschiedenis kennen, want nu zijn zij aan de beurt om veldslagen te beramen." Armando ontwerpt het monument De Ladder bij Kamp Amersfoort. Het Kamp is nooit een dag uit z’n gedachten geweest.

Vanaf 1992 is er het Bos der Onverzettelijken in Almere - met 2.133 bomen - een voor elke gefusilleerde verzetsstrijder.

In beide gasfabrieken wordt gefilmd hoe de ovens behandeld worden en het gas wordt gezuiverd. Op 9 september 1926 ontspoorde de sneltrein Den Haag - Amsterdam vlakbij station De Vink. De locomotief sleurde bij deze ontsporing een aantal wagons mee die zwaar beschadigd raken. Het ongeluk kost vier mensen het leven. Deze reportage (totale duur 7 min.) toont de ravage na de ramp. De spoorrails liggen kromgebogen in het rampgebied, de treinwagons zijn totaal verwoest en de locomotief ligt gekanteld langs de spoorrails. Een slachtoffer wordt op een baar weggedragen.
