Slags, a by-product of the production of iron, are thrown onto a pile until they've cooled off at the Hoogovens in IJmuiden. In a special factory they are then mixed with other minerals and melted in a melting furnace at a temperature of 1600 degrees Celcius. The liquid mixture is blown into the so-called wool room with steam, which creates a fibrous substance. Paper or gauze is stitched onto both sides of the mineral wool by a machine, which creates a sort of blanket that can be used to isolate houses.
