Newsreels in which Dutch subjects of a certain week are presented.
Shipping in the Netherlands has come to a halt after bargees are protesting by blocking the most important waterways with their ships. With this action they protest against the plans of State Secretary Van Hulten to end the so-called Evenredige Vrachtverdeling (Proportional Freight Distribution). The Evenredige Vrachtverdeling is operated via the Schippersbeurzen (Schippers-exchanges) in which every bargee gets assigned a registered cargo in turn. SHOTS: several freighters block the passage to the North Sea Canal near Velsen; bargees on the ships with banners reading 'Van Hulte blijf af van onze E.V.' (Van Hulte keep your hands off our P.F.D.) and 'Van Hulten moet vertrekken voor dat wij verrekken' (Van Hulten has to leave before we are damned); aerial shot of the Koningshaven Rotterdam with freighters blocking the passage; offshore vessels; aerial shot of the blocking of the Nieuwe Waterweg near Maassluis; bargees on deck of a freighter.
